Culture Introduction Activity at Iwate University: Thai Garland-Making

On November 22, Iwate University's International Office hosted a cultural event where students could explore and participate in the traditional Thai art of garland-making. Led by Thai students, the workshop offered participants a hands-on opportunity for cultural exchange.

Garlands are flower arrangements traditionally used in Thailand for various ceremonies, such as honoring Buddha, sacred objects, and parents during festivals. While fresh flowers and leaves are commonly used for traditional garlands, this event adapted the practice by using colorful threads. This allowed participants to learn the basic technique of garland-making without needing fresh materials. Although the flowers were missing, the activity successfully captured the spirit of the tradition and provided a fun, creative experience for everyone.

At first, some students found the process a bit challenging because it required careful attention to the weaving pattern. However, with patience and practice, they quickly mastered the technique. By the end of the workshop, participants had made beautiful, handmade garlands that could be used as decorations, keychains, or kept as mementos. For many, it wasn't just about creating something beautiful, but also about connecting with a cultural tradition that holds deep meaning in Thailand.

This garland-making activity demonstrated how simple crafts can bridge cultural gaps and bring people from different backgrounds together. By learning this traditional Thai craft, participants gained a deeper understanding of Thai culture. Events like this are essential for fostering mutual respect, creativity, and friendship among the diverse students at Iwate University.
